RAHOTU.
(Our own Correspondent.) It is now some time since I troubled your “ devils ” ; but owing to the unusual amount of activity displayed by (presumably) the head “ devil ” your own is once more out upon the warpath. To be plain I mean that we have experienced quite a number of earthquake shocks—some of them quite sharp ones ; but I have not heard of any damage being done as yet. Even at the moment of writing, 3,55 p.m., a shock is passing in a direction east and west, accompanied by a heavy rambling.
Now that the football season is over it is nearly time some of our young men turned tbeir attention to forming a Cricket Club and getting in some practice. It should be possible to raise a good team around here.
The Rifle Club did not hold the usual fortnightly competition last Saturday on account of being short of ammunition ; but I understand that a supply will come to hand in time for the next competition. Mr J. West has taken over the duties of hon secretary and treasurer, in place of Mr E. R. Morgan, who has held the position ever since the initiation of the club. October 4th. A social was held in the Hall on Friday night, fo,r the purpose of extending a welcome to Mr J. H. White, the new missionary to the district. There was a large attendance, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Thq Rev Mr George of New Plymouth occupied the chair. Several vocal and instrumental items were rendered. Messrs Anderson, J. Phillips, and the Rev Mr Cannell, of Opunake, spoke, welcoming Mr White to the district. The ladies of the district came well forward, and provided a splendid supper, to which full justice was done. On Wednesday night, the Quadrille Assembly held its last dance, which was a fairly successful affair. It is proposed to wind up the season with a ball to be held in about a fortnight’s time. October 7th.
