Waimate Road Board.

(Star.) The raoutly meeting was held on Wednesday, there being present . Messrs McCarthy, (chair), Budge, Pearce, Stevenson, Borrie, Watson and Blennerhasset. KIRI ROAD. Letter from G. Watson authorising payment of contractor’s cheque. CHANGES OF ROLL. H. Jeffries asked that his name be struck off the roll, having siuuendered his leaseholds. Agreed to. PLANT FOR SALE. G. H, Dixon wrote asking that a pile driver, &c., lent by him several years ago, be either returned or purchased at £4O. Agreed to return it forthwith. WATINO ROAD LOAN. D. M. Holmes wrote objecting to the proposal to raise a loan. UPPER OEO ROAD LOAN. A petition was received from settlers asking that steps be taken at once to expend the loan raised. OPUNAKE STRATFORD ROAD. Several settlers wrote asking that something be done between the Punehu stream and the Oeo Road.— To be informed that the road balances had not yet been ascertained. UPPER AUROA ROAD. M. O’Sullivan wrote asking that the Board fell the bush standing on thu road in front of his section.— Referred to the Commissioner of Crown Lands as it is understood that the section was loaded with 5s per acre for reading. COUNTY ACCOUNTS. Wm. Pearce’s name was added to the committee representing the Board. DISPUTED LIABILITY. A. Proudlock attended, and asked that an order be paid for the sum of £9, which he said had been in the hands of the former clerk before Northcote’s contract became in arrear, and which he said the foreman bad guaranteed. The forman denied that he had guaranteed anything. The Board agreed that it was rather hard on Mr Proudlock but could not see that the Board could pay the claim only having 30s in hand. Mr Stevenson pointed out that even if the foreman had agreed to guarantee the order yet such action could not possibly bind the Board. The matter dropped. AUROA ROAD. J. E. Mudford and G. Membery attended and asked that the d.p. moneys available be expended. It was pointed out that the d.p. money had not yet been received from the county, but a dangerous place near the junction with the Skeet Road is to be repaired at a cost not exceeding £5. SKEET ROAD. J. E. Mudford was authorised to do two day’s work on the Otakeho ford. W. Barleyman attended, and asked that a culvert be made.—Foreman to report. Ho also asked for the payment of the debt of £lO incurred by the late Board. Held over for funds. contractors’ deposits. Resolved that all deposits made by unsuccessful tenderers not claimed within a mouth be lodged to the credit of the treasurer’s trust account. This action was taken on the representation of the clerk that it was very inconvenient having to hold so many deposits in his safe. ' foreman’s report. Punehu -Township—Estimate for forming and metalling about 11 chains, to connect the metal with the Eltham Road, £35 ; £3 is being withheld until Mr Mason has cut an outlet drain. Opunake-Stratford Road—With the assistance promised by the settlers £l2 would do the work required fairly well. Report adopted, works to be done when money available. PUKETAPU ROAD. Mr Pearce applied for repairs to a culvert, and that water running from the road on to his property be diverted. Foreman to report. SUTHERLAND ROAD. • The Board had sent a letter to Mr Sutherland asking if he would be willing to allow £2OO or thereabouts of d.p. money accruing to the above road to be expended on Manaia Road, and Mr Sutherland now attended and said that provided the Board allowed him to retain the swing gate on the road so long as he had his farm, and provided that in case the twenty-six chains at the bottom of the road were gravelled if at any time it were required. The Board accepted the conditions stipulated. members’ travelling expenses Pursuant to notice, Mr Watson moved, That 5s travelling and hotel expenses be paid to each member living over five miles from Manaia for each meeting he attends. There was a long discussion, the majority being favorable. Messrs Stevenson, Borrie and Pearce were against the proposal. Carried subject to expenditure being legal. FOREMAN OF WORKS. Out of nineteen applicants W. R. Tremain was selected. Mr Tremain was for about six years foreman of works to the Palmerston North Borough Council, and was supported by very flattering testimonials from the Mayor and the ex-Mayor, from the civil engineer until recently in charge of the borough works, and from the borough clerk. TENDERS. Glenn Beach Road gravelling 34 chains.—Morgan, £3 10s and £2 9s ; Campbell and Day, £3 2s 6d ; Butler, £3 6s ; Mudford, £2 lls and £2 19s sd; Kearns and Cameron, £2 19s ; Kceley, £2 10s ; Sorenson and Carter, £3 7s 3d. Morgans tender, £2 9s, was. accepted subject to approval of foreman. Lower Rowan Road, -widening and deepening ditch.—Cameron, 19s 6d ; Allenby (accepted), 12s,
