Education Board.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS. Mr Allsworth, pursuant to notice given, moved—" That with a view of securing to the whole of the children in the Taranaki Education district, such efficient instruction as it is the duty of the Board to insist upon, the Inspector be instructed, upon application being made for his services by the managers of any private school, to inspect and report upon such school in the same manner as if it were a State school under the control of the Board." Seconded by Mr Mackay. A division was called for, and resulted in the motion being negatived. The voting was as follows : —Ayes (3); Messrs Adlam, Mackay and Allsworth; noes (6); Miss Heywood the Chairman, Messrs Wade, Ambury, Faull and Hill.

NGARIKI SCHOOL. The Inspector was authorised to supply the necessary apparatus to the Ngariki School, and subject to the approval of the Oaonui Committee, Miss Hill will be appointed temporary teacher in the terms of the sub Committee's report—viz., the teacher to receive capitation allowance. PUPIL TEACHERS' EXAMINATION. The syllabus for pupil teachers, as submitted by the sub-Committee, was adopted. In the new syllabus considerable attention is givej to the training of pupil teachers in school management and method, both theoretical and practical, and the course is framed with a view of qualifying teachers for their certificates. For a pass 55 per cent of the marks are required, and candidates must obtain at least 25 per cent of the marks in each subject. For the third and fourth year, Latin and Algebra are optional. A new syllabus in sewing was also adopted. SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION. The forthcoming examination for scholarship will be based on the standard requirements in the syllabus of 1891.—News.
