A local firm of solicitors, acting on behalf of a large English firm, has issued a writ again«t one of the Canterbury dairy companies, claiming damages in respect of the alleged inferiority of the butter supplied from the company's factory for shipment to England during last season.
According to the New Zealand Official Year Book the cost of management, on total expenditure by Road Boards was 9-9 per cent: County Councils 11-3 per cent. From this it would appear that ratepayers get their money expended much more economically by Road Boards than by County Councils.
Mr Dempster, who has recently been in charge of the Opunake Dairy Factory, has been appointed manager of the Otakeho Factory, the Opunake Factory being turned into a creamery. Mr Dempster has the respect and confidence of all the suppliers here, and will no doubt become an equal favorite with the Otakeho suppliers. Mr Newton King will hold a clearing sale on Thursday at the farm, Mauahi Road, on account of Mr J. H. Bleakley who has leased the place. Amongst the lines to be offered are 60 quiet milch cows, which comprised his dairy during the past milking season, and were all carefully selected. There are also 100 head of young stock from 12 to 18 months. The thoroughbred horse Rata will also be offered.
Mr Knott, who gives a limelight lantern exhibition and lecture entitled " Ten nights in a bar-room" in the Town Hall, to-morrow evening, will also appear at Pihama on Thursday ; Otakeho, Friday: Manaia, Saturday ; Ratanui, Tuesday next; and Awatuna on Wednesday next. He then returns north of Opunake, where he has beeu requested to repeat the lecture at several places. He is also under engagement to give another three nights in New Plymouth; The school children will be photographed to-morrow morning, and the picture produced in the evening. In each place he visits he takes a photograph of the school children to be shown at night.
