MANAXA ROAD. The County Clerk intimated that there was a debit balance of £l4O against this road. FINNERTV ROAD, A claim for £2B was received from the Stratford County Council for half share of work done on the road, but no particulars of claim were furnished.— Left iu hands of chairman. [BudgeStevenson.] Resolved that a 3ft Gin ditch be made on the east side of the road out of landfund. [Stevensou-Watsou.] SOUTH ROAD. The Chairman said that the South Road would have to receive attention, as it is simply dangerous. There was a sum of £125 subsidy now due from the Government, and he would recommend that the work of repairing should be proceeded with at once.

Mr Pearce wanted to know if the subsidy on rates collected on the district roads is going to be expended on the Main South Road. If the accounts are to be mixed up from all parts of the district and expended on the main road then he would certainly object until he knew it was legal. The foreman’s report strted that it would cost £25 to keep the main road open, and £ls to repair the Eltham road.

Mr Stevenson said that it was the duty of the Board to keep the main road open. It must take steps to expend any money it may have. He contended that it would be just as well for this Board to lc>y a rate large enough to do the work required as for the comity to take back the roads and levy the rate. If the money to do the work required to carry out the foreman’s report is not in Land, then the Board should anticipate its rate. Mr Pearce was not at all sure that the taking o\cr of the main roads was legal, lie thought that three weeks after the gravel had been carted over the roads they would be as bad as ever.

Mr Watson said that an expenditure of a few pounds now would save double the money later on and tho Chairman agreed v,uh him.— fcjtar.
