Hawera County Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held on Friday. Present—Crs Heslop (chairman), McLean, Scott, Quin, Stewart, Forsyth. CORRESPONDENCE. Public Trust Office, stating that a return of native leases would shortly be made up, and Council would be supplied with a copy. 0. Robinson, drawing attention to drains on Mangawhero and Campbell Roads, and stating that nothing had been done to them since they were made, and asking for thirds from his section to be spent on the work.—Cr Quin said money had been spent on cleaning drains.—Left in the hands of the foreman ; Mr Robinson to be reminded that he was in error as to nothing having been done to drains since made. Normanby Town Board, stating that complaints had been made by Mr Alexander of damage by cattle on roads, and asking that ranger ihould have cattle impounded.—Cr Quin said Mr Alexander had his own remedy; he could impound the cattle himself. — The Chairman moved, and Cr Scott seconded, that the request be granted. —Carried. A Elliott, stating that he had carted 40 yards of stone from river on to Manaia Road, and asking for payment.—Referred to Waimate Road Board. F. Oowern, forwarding valuation rolls. Hector Sutherland, re thirds from Section 29, Block 16, Kaupokonui, enclosing copy of letter from Land Board, showing how thirds were scheduled for expenditure, and asking, as it was manifest that the money was not spent according to schedule, that steps be taken to have it spent as specified, iu schedule. —Several councillors agreed that the money had not been spent in the vicinity cf sections specified, and it was resolved that the matter be enquired into. A committee, consisting of the Chairman and Crs Stewart and Mcßae, was appointed to deal with the question of accounts between the Council and the Waimate Road Board. The Chr irman said at last meeting, under the impression that Mr Goodlands had only a small frontage to Huuter Road, he had moved that his section be excluded ; but he found that Mr Goodlands had a frontage of thrc > quarters of a mile, an he now thought that haff his section should be taken into the Hunter Road loan area. He moved. That in all cases half the corner sections be taken. Cr Quin said he had opposed the exemption to Mr Goodlands at the time, but now he thought it would be better to let it go, as the loan had been advertised. Cr Forsyth thought that as a rule the corner sections should go to the Main Road. The matter dropped. In accordance with understanding at previous meeting that members should report what roads in their ridings might be closed. Cr Stewart said he believed there was from £l5O to £2OO worth of land lying idle, and which would never be used as roads. He suggested for consideration the advisability of closing and selling part of tbe Ahipaipa Road to Inaba Road, a division road which had never been formed ; the Rama Road from Main South Road to sea ; Taikatu Road, same; a number of short lengths not shown on country map, totalling perhaps 20 orSOchaius ; and part of Siggs’ Road. Cr Quin suggested two or three roads near the Normanby railway line, which were useless owing to the railway. Cr Scott suggested the- Kakapirau Road through Mcßae’s; Whakamaru Road through Me Sweeney’s; continuation of Meremorc Road down toManawapou through Lysaght’s ; Allen Road through Imue’s; Noonan Road between Scott’s and BuckreU’s, Cr Quin gave notice that he would move at next meeting to close unused roads. —Star.
