AKE-AKE v. OPUNAKE.
The second match in the competition for Mrs Kennedy’s cup was decided here on Saturday last. Both teams rolled up in force, and as the weather was favorable a close game was the result. Opunake, losing the toss, kicked off in the first spell. All through this half the game was of an exciting nature. When the spell was about half through the ball was taken across Opunake’s line, and in the scamble that followed H. Young touched down. The kick failed to increase the score. Ake-Ake had a series of free kicks awarded them, but they all failed to score. Soon after Jonas dribbled the ball down the field, picked up close to the line, and was tackled by Edmunds. They crossed the line together and touched down. The referee awarded a try for Ake-Ake. The scorer took the kick and landed a goal. The spell shortly after ended 8 to 0. The wind had now calmed somewhat and the play continued close until the middle of the spell when J. Lambie got away and was never collared, scoring for Opunake. W. Humphries took the kick and landed a good goal. The spell ended without further score, leaving the visitors victors by 8 to 5. Mr Webb acted impartially as referee, and Messrs West and 0. Humphries as touch-judges.
