HOJIIE AND FOREIGN. London, July 'l7. The Court of Appeal has reversed Justice Sir Arthur Kekwitche's order dismissing the action Bean v. Flower, and refused to stay the sale of the 56,000 acres of land at Mokau, N.Z., fixed for 17th. A large and influential meeting of merchants was held in the Manchester Town Hall, when Mr Hotson, of Victoria, read a paper on the colonial produce trade Mr John A. Beath, chairman of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, presided."" Mr M. C. Thompson and Mr Goodsall (of Weddell and Co.) made a strong appeal for the establishment of direct trade between Manchester and Australia. A vote of thanks to Mr Hotson for his paper was carried by acclamation. Sofia, July 17. A dastardly attempt was made on the life of Mr Stambuloff to-day. While returning to his home in the city, four men stopped his carriage and attempted to assassinate the Premier, both of whose hands were severed in defending himself. He tried to effect his escape by fleeing, but was shot down and repeatedly stabbed while lying on the ground. His condition is critical. One arrest has been made. Shanghai, July 15.
Seven hundred Chinese attacked the Japanese garrision at Heinou, Formosa, but were repulsed after a desperate conflict the loss of 200 killed and many imprisoned. The Japanese loss numbered 14. Ottawa, July 15.
The crisis in Canada over the Manitoba school questions is becoming more intense. At a demonstration 30,000 Orangemen resolved to resist to the death the attempt of the Government to restore Catholic schools which the Manitoba Legislature abolished. Ten thousand Orangemen paraded the streets of Ottawa as a protest against any Government interference in the matter. Calcutta, July 18. The Ameer of Afghanistan has released Umra Khan. Sydney, July 15. News by the Catterthun, which has just arrived with new teas, states that half the town of Niljata has been burned and 2400 houses destroyed. Several persons perished in the flames. Cholera is raging in Saijon and Cholon, and many deaths are recorded. Mr W. J. Fergusson, Labor candidate, has been returned unopposed for Sturt seat. Melbourne, July 17. In response to Mr Davitt's appeal for donations to the Irish Election Fund £SOO has been forwarded to Ireland from Melbourne to-day, and it is believed a similar amount will be subscribed at Sydney.
