Death of Hakaria.
Another of the old landmarks has disappeared by the death of the Chief - Hakaria, who died on Thursday morning at Waiau pa. His was a very eventful life, and he had travelled a graat deal. When a young man he undertook service in the Royal Navy, but tiring of restraint got his discharge. For many years he followed whaling, when that was a regular trade from this part. During bis sea-faring life he visited England and the continent. He was also acquainted with the west coast of both North and South America, and when the Californian goldfields were in full swing he went there and tried his luck- as a digger. Eventually he returned here and settled down to primitive life again, although he retained certain European customs. Some years ago he became totally blind, but hearing of an oculist who was practising in F Wellington he visited him, and went under his care, with the result that ;;.. .his sight was restored. His familiar form will be missed, as he was frequently to be seen promenading the town, supporting himself with a hand- j somely carved taiaha, decorated with . feathers. He was over 80 jears of age.
