Soon after that Stars obtained a try and converted, and then again they got a goal from a penalty kick ; so that when time w’as called the game stood ; Stars, 7 points; Ake Ake, 5. MEETING EE DEBATING CLUB. The adjourned meeting in connection with the formation of a Debating Club and Literary Society was held on Saturday evening in the Hall. Mr Y. Harrison occupied the chair, and explained the object of the meeting. He also read the minutes of the previous meeting held on 17th May. As it had been decided by resolution at the former meeting that a club should be formed. Ihe Chairman stated the business of the meeting would be to elect officers, &c., Mr McCollum asked if this was a revival of the Farmer’s Club which w r as in existence here some time since, or if it was a new venture altogether. The Chairman understood it w r as a new society. Mr E. R Morgan thought he could satisfy Mr McCullum that the old club was dead. Mr McCullum said he considered that as the old club had gone to the expense of having its rules, Ac., printed, and-as there w r as perhaps'a credit balance in its financial position, and also as there might be some members present who would be joining this new society. Mr Morgan, as Secretary of the old club, should not have allowed matters to go on without enlightening those present of the position of affairs. Considerable discussion ensued, and Mr Morrison moved, This meeting be further postponed till next Saturday, when members of the old Farmer’s Club could meet and decide wliether it affiliate with the new club.

Mr Morgan wished to explain that the reason he had allowed matters to fall in abeyance, v/as that the ipembert had not tamed up when he called the meetings. The first two or three debates went off w'ell, and then they cooled down.

Mr McGloin considered the best course would be to proceed with the business. He took it that, as the rules of the old club provided that a general meeting be held annually for election of office-bearers, &0,, and as this had not been done, there w r as now no club. Some two years had elapsed since the last meeting was held.

After further discussion Mr Morrison withdrew his motion, and business was resumed.

The following office-bearers were elected : President, Mr Harrison ; vice-president, MrE. R. Morgan ; bon secretary and treasurer, Mr F. Morgan ; committee, Messrs J. Colmer, H. Harrison, J. Rothery, S. Pelham, and E. O’Sullivair.

The annual subscription was fixed at 2s 6d. (There was a motion for the aristocratic sum of a guinea, but the democratic spirit of the meeting immediately asserted itself.) Saturday, June Btb, was fixed as the date for the first debate to take place, the subject being “Freetrade” (Mr Rambling) v. “ Protection ” (Mr V. Harrison). Mr McGloiu spoke on the advisability of pushing on with the matter of erecting a side-wing to the hall. Mr Pelham stated, in reply to a question from Mr McCullum, that the only assistance the Government would render to a reading-room would be to send all Government publications free, and to grant free postage on newspapers and magazines, provided the room was open to the public for a certain time during each week. The meeting adjourned.
