Basket Supper and Dance.

The basket supper and dance in aid of the funds of the Church of England was held on Friday evening, aud was a very pronounced success. There were about seventy couples present, and all seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly. The floor was in capital order, and the hall well lighted aud nicely decorated. Mr Good supplied the music in his well-known style, which contributed in no small degree to the enjoyment of those tripping it on the " light fantastic." During the evening several vocal items were given. Mr Raikes sang "Queen of the Earth " in good style, and was loudly applauded. Mr W. Des Forges sang " Nellie Bawn," and received wellmerited applause. Miss and Master Humphries played a pianoforte duet, which was executed in very good style. The feature of the entertainment was the sale of the baskets containing supper for two. Each lady was expected to bring a basket and hand it in at tho door, such basket to also contain a slip of paper with the lady donor's name written thereon. When supper time came, Mr W. D. Scott ascended the rostrum and auctioned the baskets. Then the buyer, on receiving his purchase, ascertained the name of bis partner, and bad to share his spoil with her. Although it was supposed that each purchase would bo a surprise, it soon became apparent that some were in «• the know," with the result that spirited competition took place for a number of the baskets, which all tended to swell the recaipts. We understand the proceeds were about £l3. Mr Des Forges acted as M.C. in h,s usual urbane manner.
