RAHOTU.
(Our own Correspondent.)
A meeting of the Bahotu School Committee was held on Friday evening, Present: —Messrs Harrison, Rothery. West, and Kahui. Mr Harrison occupied the chair. Minutes of the last committee meetj ing were read and confirmed. Correspondence,—From Education Board, forwarding . a copy of Mr Wright's letter objecting to the late election, on the ground that Mr E. R. Morgan, was chairman of the meeting of householders, had not been resident in the district the necessary length of time.
The committee decided to inform the Board that with reference to of tba meeting of houslholders did not hold good, and that they considered that under existing circumstances Mr Morgan's election on she committee, to which Mr Wright also objected, might be allowed to remain as it is, as on the last committee, of which Mr Wright was a member, there were two members who held their seats illegally, and that gentleman did not object in either case. The Education Board informed the committee that a pupil teacher had been appointed to the Bahotu School, and also notified the payment of capitation allowance to the committee's credit. This was all the business.
A movement is on foot here to try to form a Debating Club &c, and a meeting of those interested in the project was held in the schoolroom on Friday evening. There was a fair muster. Mr Harrison was voted to the chair and explained the object of the meeting. Mr McGloin considered the object, but pointed out that, as it would be desirable to have tbe use of the Hall for the meetings &c, of the Club, it would be advisable to postpone further proceedings till after the Annual General meeting of the Hall Committee, which was to take place on Saturday evening. Mr Morgan concurred. He said there were matters in connection with the library and with the question of rooms, &c, which might be arranged with the new Hall Committee. After discussion, it was resolved that a Debating and Literary Club be formed. A committee consisting of Messrs McGloin, Harrison, and Morgan was appointed, to confer with the hall authorities. The meeting now stands adjourned to Saturday next, May 25th, when the above committee's report will be received. The customary vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
The chief subject of discussion dating the last day or two has been the visit of the Premier to the district. He seems to have won favor in the eyes of a good many by his genial good nature and hearty manner of address. We are now experiencing some proper winter weather, heavy rain falling on several days lately. The foot-ball match, Clifton v. Ake Ake, arranged to take place at Oakura on Saturday last, was forfeited by the former, who did not appear. The Rifle Club intend holding a competition for a trophy presented by Mr W. C.
