The gn at injustice which this district has been suffering through the land being kept in a state of idleness caused the Town Board to make representations to the Public Trustee, suggesting that the lands between the Arawhata Road and the Taungatara River should be placed in the'market at as early a date as possible. In reply, the following letter has been received : Public Trust Office, Wellington, 30th April, 1895. G. W. Rogers, Esq.. Chairman Opunake Town Board. Sir, —With reference to your letter of 22nd ult, to which I regret that pressuresof business should have delayed my reply, I beg to reply that I am now preparing for advertisement, and expect to have ready in a few days, a notice that tenders will bo received lor leases of a large area of lands that you mention. In thanking you for your suggestions that I should advertise in southern papers the notice respecting the letting of these leases, and for the expression of your opinion that the felling of the bush on the roads might with advantage precede settlement, I should perhaps observe that, though it might consist with the best inteiests of the native owners of the lands to adopt your suggestions, and to concur in your opinion, you speak as if you were influenced by the interests of settlement and of the lessees. The only consideration, however, which can influence me in the administration of the West Coast settlement reserves is, as you are doubtless aware, the interests of the native ■ -wners. (Signed) J.
