Rating on Improved Values.

At the meeting of the Stratford County Council, the following suggestions, emanating from the chairman, were put forward as motions, and were duly seconded and carried:— 1. That this Council represent to the Government that grave inequalities and injustices are caused by the system of rating on improved values, and respectfully urge the necessity of adopting a system of rating on unimproved values. 2. They would suggest that the valuation should be made by Government to secure uniformity in standard of valuation, inequalities between local valuations now causing serious injustice and dissatisfaction where several districts have to contribute a common rate for harbor, hospital, charitable aid and similar purposes. 3. They would moreover suggest that where road improvements are made under Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, the repayment for cost of •which is secured by a lien on the settlers' holdings, the increased value given by such improvements should not be added to the unimproved value, but considered as a part of the improved value.
