The Gale.

A very heavy gale has been raging from the south-east for the past three days, accompanied by heavy squalls o£ rain. A large number of sheds and outbuildings have been overturned. We heard a rumor that - Mr Wiley’s house, on the Eltham Road, was blown over.

The telegraph wires are down north of Eltham, and also south of Patea. There were between fifty and sixty head of young stock grazing in the Government paddock, and they crowded down on the sand near the edge of the cliff for shelter. They were apparently all blown over the cliff, ten of them being killed. A buggy-shed belonging to Mr T. Knowles, of Opunake, was overturned on Sunday. All the hedges and trees show signs of the gale, being all blasted on the weather side.
