Waimate Loan Committee.
A meeting of the Waimate Riding Loans Committee was held on Wednesday, the 13th inst., at 3 p.m., at Manaia Town Hall.
Mr S. Forsyth stated that a feeling of discontent was said to exist among the ratepayers north of the Skeet Road at the boundary of the proposed loan area having been taken along the block boundary about half a mile to the southward of the Skeet Road, thus throwing the improvement and maintenance of an important throughline (Skeet Road) upon a number of settlers, the majority of whom are already rated under the Loans to Local Bodies Act.
On the other hand it was pointed out that the schedule of proposed works for which it is proposed to borrow, embraces the improvement of various branch roads leading from the Main South Road to the back districts —the Manaia, Auroa, Patiki. and other roads—and that settlers residing to the north of the proposed area would have the benefit of the use of several miles of improved roads without having to be specially rated for the expenditure. It was further shown that any steps taken to form the proposed loan area into a ward, if successful, would not be an obstacle to the formation of a separate middle ward, extending from the block line south of the Skcet Road northward to the railway reserve, and having the control and management of the Skeet and branch roads.
An announcement by a member of the committee that the timber in the temporary bridge over the Kaupokonui was perished, and that the carpenters engaged in strengthing the structure had expressed an opinion that it is in a highly dangerous condition, impressed the .committee with the urgency of the position, and the following resolutions were passed re ward petitions:— “ That all signed petitions (which may be to hand at that date) be presented to the Waimate Road Board at next meeting of that body, and that it be explained to the Board that a number of the petitions have not been completed owing to the opposition of settlers north of of the loan area to the boundaries agreed to by the committe.” [Stevenson-McCarlhy.)
LOAN PROPOSALS. “ That application be made at once to the Haweva County Council and Waimate Road Board asking that these local bodies take action conjointly to obtain a poll of the ratepayers in the proposed loan area for the purpose of raising a ban of £BOOO for improvement of the Main South Road and of certain portions of the Patiki-Nopera. And that the plan on Avbieh thesa various proposed works are shown be laid before the Council and Board.” [Lambie-McCarthy.] “ That Messrs McCarty, Hurley, and Stewart be a deputation to wait upon the Waimate Road Board and that Messrs McCarthy, Forsyth, and Stewart be a duputation to wait upon the county council and press on these bodies the urgent necessity of taking action at once to have the necessary preliminary steps in connection with the poll for the loan set in motion.” [Stevenson-Lambie.J Accounts to the amount of £7 6s 2d were laid on the table, but it was resolved that these should be held over till next meeting of the committee after the county meeting.—Hawera Star.
