Parihaka Road Board.
The adjourned meeting of the above Board was held on Monday, February 25th. Present —Messrs Maxwell (in the chair), Wells, Wright, aud Caddy. The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting and also those of committee meetings were read and confirmed. Correspondence from J. C. C. Crisp, asking permission to
deepen drain. Mr Crisp attended and explained the position. Bequest granted. [Wright-Caddy.] - From J. C. C. Crisp, drawing attention to a culvert backing up water so that it caused damage to her land. The Chairman suggested, as there was a small amount of revenue due to that part, that the Board might supply the timber, provided that Mr Crisp and interested did the labor, so as to erect a bridge culvert at the place complained of.
Besolved that if the settlers concerned will find the labor, the Board will supply the timber. [MaxwellWright. From J. C.'C. Crisp, complaining of fence across road which had "been erected by Mr Quickenden. Mr Crisp waited on the Board in connection with this, and was informed that no permission had been granted to fence tho road, and therefore if it was an obstruction to his traffic on the road, it would be his own business to remove it. From T. A. Bushe Bailey, solicitor, informing the Board that he had started practising his profession in Opunake. Letter to be acknowledged. From W. Harvey, applying for payment for cutting scrub on Kahui Boad. Application granie.l <n the usual terms. [Wells-Wright.] From D. C. Simson, applying for payment for scrubbing on Weiteika Boad. No funds. The Chairman said this scrubbing was becoming a s-riousmatter. There were so many claims cropping up that he did not see where the money was to come from. He moved, " That in future no claims for scrubbing be acknowledged unless the leave of the Board be previously obtained to do the work." Seconded by Mr Wright and carried. From Treasury, notifyiug that £IBOO on account of the Kahui Road loan had been placed to the credit of the Board's account. From J..R0110 aud Benjamin Gray, requesting that eight or nine chains •of gravelling be done on the Minarapa Boad. Besolved that the letter be acknowledged. No funds. From W. D. Scott, on behalf of Messrs Richards, Cameron, and Carter, applying for usual terms for scrubbing on Waiteika Boad. No Funds. From Taranaki County Council with reference to irrigation at Opua, stating that the Board had full power to undertake the work without reference to the Council.
From Taranaki County Council requesting the Board to apply for an advance from the Treasury of 75 per cent on account of subsidy. Resolved that the request be complied With. [Wright-Wells.] From Commissioner of Crown Lands, enclosing circular regarding proposed Fair -Rent Bill and requesting to be supplied with certain information as per schedule forwarded. Resolved, " That it is the opinion of this Board that existing rents would i justify the introduction of a Fair Rent Bill". [Wells-Caddy.] With regard to the" detailed information, the clerk was instructed to reply that the time and expense necessary to procure the information desired is too much for the Board to undertake. Tenders.—Contract No. 14, feliing and stumping Kahni Road ; only one tender was received, and being considered too high, was not accepted. No. 23—Scrubbing: W. McLauchlan (accepted), 2s per chain; A. E. Phillips, 2s per chain; Harrison and Co., 2s 8d per chain. . The clerk reported various works which required urgent attention. Resolved that tenders be called for work on Kahui Road. Resolved that tenders be called for erecting bridge and ditching on Newall Road. Resolved that tenders be called
I for scrubbi;)?, ditching, and culverting on NgariU R ad. Resolved th it a sum of £5 be voted for drain on Whitiora Read, to be subsides d, if necessary, by settlers. Provided fchat no expenditure tike place unless gates be removed. Resolved that tenders be called for culvert and twelve chains ditching on Kina Road. Resolved chat the Board advance £3 for necessary repairs to Opua Road, provided Mr Donald contributes a like sum either in cash or labor. Mr Wright called attention to complaints with respect t"> tho manner in which several metalling contracts were being carried out, and also the material used. A committee of the Board decided to inspect works complained of and report on same. Accounts amouniing to £l2O 6s were passed for payment, and several progress payments agreed to. ,
