The Opunake Times. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1895. HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION.
The election has resulted, as we predicted, in the return of the six country candidates. Mr Newton King was the only town candidate who polled anywhere near the mark at all. We do not anticipate the necessity in the future for another such contest, as no doubt the new Board will take the earliest opportunity of dividing the district into ridings, when each will return its own member. Each riding will need to have about £400,000 valuation, so that the Borough of New Plymouth, together with sufficient added country in its immediate vicinity, will become a riding, and in future return its own member the same as any of the other ridings, and the cry of town versus country can then be buried. Had the old Board carried out its implied promise, and divided the district, as we considered Jt was bound injustice to do, we should not have initiated the present agitation in order to obtain redress ; but by their unconstitutional action the town members have brought defeat and humiliation upon themselves. History repeats itself. Britishers will not swallow autocratic government, and if their just claims are not amicably met it is not long before they assert themselves and obtain what they want, like in the present instance.
