Things have been rather more lively than usual up this way during the last week, owing to the fact that there are a good number of men employed on the contract works. Messrs Colraer and. Bradley, who recently had a large new shop erected in which to carry on their blackscnithing trade, have had to put in another forge and employ another blacksmith to meet the requirements of their trade. When we. consider the fact that there.is another blacksmith here, it must show there is a lot of work to be done. School commenced on Monday, 28th January, and on two or three days there were forty-four children present. Then there are several more who were present last year who have not resumed work yet. Householders complain that the Education Board has not done its duty. The Board led the School Committee to believe that the necessary alterations would be effected, and went so far as to pass a resolution postponing the painting until the enlargement had been done. I should have mentioned above that the school is only built to accomodate 40 pupils. Now the painting has been done, but no alterations. The Committee have been quietly waiting in expectation of the work being done, and in the meantime the money has been voted away to other parts of the district. It is to be hoped that matters will be rectified before any mischief happens through overcrowding. A meeting of the committee of the Parihaka Road Board was held on Saturday in the Board's office, the business being to open tenders for work on the Ngariki Road. Two tenders—one from R. Dann and the other from H. Young—were just the same, £8,155. On lots being drawn, Mr Dann was the successful tenderer. A tender at a higher rate was recoivod from A. Coffey,
