PUNGAREHU R.C. HACK MEETING. President: Mr M. Fleming. Vice-President: Mr Layard. Handicapper: Mr R. G. Pardy. Judge : Mr A. Bayly. Clerk of Scales : Mr W. D. Scott. Clerk of Course: Mr G. Wells. Starter : Mr A. T. Wills. Hon Secretary and Treasurer: Mr H. Corb-Jtt. Stewards : Messrs T. W. Corbett, W. D. Scott, J. Caddy, Rua, Kupi. G. Wells, Te Whetu, M. J. Wallenstein, A. Wadsworth, and J. C. P. Montefiore. Committee : Messrs M. Fleming, B. B. E. Layard, T. W. Corbett, G. Wells, and J. Simpson. The above meeting took place on Thursday, when the Club was favored with a beautiful day. There were about 80') people present, amongst whom were a large number of ladies and children, the Httle knolls which abound on the course being occupied by family parties who avail themselves of this annual gathering for a picnic outing. There were fair fields for all the events except the hurdles, and in most of them the racing was very good, making the winner hard to pick. The starting was good, although in some of the events the horsea were very troublesome at the post. However, starter Wilis was lenient, and let the jockeys off without any fines, and succeeded in giving very general satisfaction. Tho energetic secretary, Mr H. Corbett, was most attentive to his duties, and carried out his arduous work satisfactorily to all concerned, which contributed in no small degree to the success of the meeting. Mr Wells made a very efficient clerk of the course, and all the stewards were very attentive to their duties at the several posts allotted them, causing the meeting to pass off very smoothly. Mr Gray, the popular host of the Okato Hotel, ran the publican's booth, and did a good trade, although drunkenness was not in evidence throughout the day. The luncheon booth was in charge of Mr Swaysland, and reflected the greatest credit on his catering, and many caterers at country meetings might well take a lesson from him, which would tend to the comfort and convenience of the public. Messrs Adams and Andrews worked the totalisator, and put nearly £IOOO through for the day. The largest dividend was in the District Welter Handicap, in which Marangi favored his supporters with £lB 10s in return for their confidence. There were a few "bookies" on the ground, who were fairly well patronised, but there was a total abseuce of games. There was only one protest, viz., in the Hurdle Race, against Egmout, for boring. The first time round Kaitoa struck the hurdle in the straight and knocked a gap in it. When coming home Egmont's rider, who apparently had the race in hand, allowed Kaitoa to get too close, and deliberately rode across the course several chains before the hurdle was reached to take the gap, thereby forcing Knitoa off the hurdle, and compelling him to jump the post at the outside end of it. The protest was not allowed. The following are the results : Handicap Hurdles, of £2O ; second second horse to receive £3 from the stakes. One mile and a quarter.
