NEW PLYMOUTH HARBOR ELECTION.
(to the editor.)
Sib, —In your paper I read that your district condemns the members of the Harbour Board for not agreeing to the district being divided into ridings. Had I been in the Board, I should have done the same. The country at the present time can nominate six members, and if the country vote together they can put in six if they like, and this should be done for their own interests. If it had been divided into ridings, the country could only send or nominate four members, as a large part of the country around the town of New Plymouth—l believe as far as Waitara on the north, and south of Oakura on*the south—goes in with New Plymouth, and this would prevent a large part of the country from voting in its own interests, as it would be swamped by the town votes. This state of things we don’t want, and therefore I hope yoUr part of the district will go with all other parts of the country district and nominate six in different parts and vote for them to a man. Mr Monkhouse, of Btratford, is a good man for that part, and other good men for looking after the country’s interests can be found. I trust your readers and country settlers will see by this that we want the country all to itself to vote in favour of our six nominated members, and not to have part of the country attached to the town, for that would weaken the country’s chance of having the majority in the Board. Trusting that the farmers and country settlers will all pull together and vote for the six country nominees in a block.—l am, &c.,
COL'NTKY KAlKl’Ailili. Oukura, -Juu. llUi,lßUo.
