On payment of £OO a young man is exempt from military service in Spain. The other day a man wrote to the Queen Kegent that he had already paid £6OO for ten of his sons, and begging her to excuse the other fourteen as he had no more money. The Queen granted his request. Dr Caro, who has returned to Napier from a tour in Europe, has made himself thoroughly acquainted with Professor Koux’s (of Paris) and Professors Behring and Erlech's (of Berlin) new remedies in the treatment of diphtheria and croup. He has brought out with him samples of the antitoxin.
