Carbine.
Carbine, the greatest horse Australia has eter known, is to be sold by public anotion nest March. Not only is Carbine fairly cntit'ed to be considered the best horse Australia has produced, but his Melbourne Cup victory under 10st slb, when be ran the two miles in Bmin 28|sec, is “ Tirlinga ” thinks, the finest performance ever accomplished by a horse in this or any other country. Highborn is a good horse, and for the Melbourne Cup cf 1890 Mr Forrester backed him for £30,000, yet with only fist 81b on his back Carbine beat him by four lengths. In 1891 Carbine, was given lOst 121 b in the Melbourne Cup, and had his leg not given away abqut a month before the race would have run and started favorite. There is only one other Australian horse whose performances in handicaps approach that of Carbine. This was The Barb who won the Sydney Cup of 1869 under lOst 81b, and was weighted for the following Melbourne Cup at list 7ib. But The Barb ran at a different time to Carbine. There were not so many good horses about in his day. Moreover, Carbine may fairly be styled the most consistent good horse we have ever had. He ran for four years, and was only o. n ?g out of place. Of all Alusket’s sons Carbine tire" soundest, and he has started his stud career in brilliant style. After leaving the training stable in 1891 Carbine served three mares, and one of his foals was Wallace, who is regarded as the best two-year-old seen out this season. Every rating man will regret thpitMr Donald Wallace is parting with Carbine and all his splendid mares. No colors have ytt been more popular than Mr Wallace’s and there is not a racing man in Australia who will not feel sorry that the magpie colors are to be packed away for a time at all events. That they may soon be unfurled again will be the wish of every man who honors a grand sportsman. —Exchange.
