MAORI RACE MEETING. The Maori race meeting on the Pun garehu course came off on Tuesday last. The early part of the day was fine, but a cold .south-easter, with light showers, came on towards evening. There was about 400 people on the ground, and a large detachment of “ bookies ” and kindred folks. The booth was run by Mr W. Grey, of Okato, and appeared to do a good business, although everything passed off in a very orderly manner. The arrangements were good and the races were got off pretty promptly. Mr Tito weilded the starter’s flag, and quite surprised everyone by the way he despatched his fields. Mr Wi Kupe, secretary, had good control over his work, and to him is largely due the success of the meeting. There were a number of games of one kind or other on the course, which were well patronised. On the whole, it was a very pleasant day’s outing. The fields were good, likewise the racing, and there were several well contested races, showing that the handicapping, principally on appearance, was not far out. Te Whetu and Ruru acted as judges, and Mr George Horo made an efficient clerk of the course. The Hon. J. Carroll was amongst the visitors. Following are the results Hurdle Race, of 5 sovs.
