Messrs Christie and Co.
One of the principal local industries is Messrs Christie and Co.'s Furni'ure and Sash and Door Factory. Iu taking a look through their premises we found all hands as usual busy putting up goods to order. They have just completed all the joinery required for the extensive additions which Mr O'Brien has been making to Mr Tho?. Knowles' hotel. Heretofore nearly everything in the way of sashes and doors have been imported, but judging by the exellent work turned out by this firm on the present occasion, there is no necessity to send out of the district for auything required in the joiuery way. The windows have all circular heads, and these have been made on the premises, ar.d are turned out in a thoroughly workmanlike manner. Mr Christ'e is a thoroughly efficient cabinetmaker, and the articles of furniture turned out at their establishment combine the very best workmanship with elegant designs; and considering the heavy freight charges on bulky goods, they can supply articles on the spot at considerably less than imported price. They are at present employed putting up some of the furniniture required for the new hotel. We noticed a very handsome and elegant panel bedstead which is being made to order. The woods have been selected with taste and care, and when polished will make a very nice piece of furniture. The firm have also in hand a very elaborate " Duchess " suite of bedroom furniture, which is being made of rirnu, and will, when finished, be fit to be shown iu any furniture bazaar in the colony. They have also a good assortment of ready-made furniture to select from, which will repay a visit from those about to set up housekeeping, or who are wanting to make additions to their present acquirements. When a local firm lays itself out for supplying settlers' wants they should be supported, especially when they are prepared to supply anything required at city prices.
