(By “ Stumps.”)
The match which was to have taken place on Saturday between Op;j; a' e and Rabotu did not come off, as the Rahotu team did not put in an appearance. This was, it seems, owing to some misunderstanding that Opunake was going to play Manaia on that date. The Manaia club wired, “ Can play you,” and it afterwards turuel out the telegram should have read, “ Cannot play you.” Then there was not sufficient time left to make the necessary airangements with Eahotu. Lunch was provided, but as the fdl team of visitors did not turn up, they had to dispose of it the best way possible. There being eighteen members on the ground, a scratch match was played between teams picked by Messrs Edmonds and W agstaff. .The latter was the only one in his team who reached double figures (10), be being well taken from a good drive at long field by A. Good. Edmonds (24) and Chapman (14) were double figures scorers on Edmonds' side, both displaying good hitting powers. The following are the full scores : wagstaff’s team. F. Reid, b Chapman 0 J. The team to represent Opunake will be picked from the following: Wagstaff, Chapman, Corbett, Nutball, Stonox, Edmonds, F. Reid, J. Rogers, H. Good, A. Gcal, A. Young, Stewart, Wills, Burke, R. Hill, Armstrong. The team should endeavour to get as much pracFce as possible during the week. _ All the batsmen have rather much inclination for attempting gallery hits, which aro very effective when they come off, but p'ayers should remember that every elevate 1 bit is a probable catch, and that although they escape during practice, when their own fielders aro sitting down, smoking, or asleep, they are not likely to have the same hick when playing against a team on its metal. Apart from the unsoundness of such play, carpet cricket pays the best.
