The Inspector of Machinery wrote stating that the Board 'Would have to appoint .an engineer holding a river certificate for the. dredge. The Chief ; Inspector of Machinery at Wellington wrote on the same subject, V ” ' ' Mr. George moved, Viid Mr-Connett sedoAded, “ That the Secretary be instructed to write to the Chief Inspect tor of Machinery pointing,out that the working of the dredge has hitherto been carried out without any difficulty; also that somo probability exists of $n early amendment of, the pres- nt law respecting engine drivers, and to ask whether, under these circumstances, the Board cannot continue its present course until the result of the bill now before Parliament becomes known;

the Secretary to state that the man now in charge has been iu that position for eight years.” Carried. A- letter was received from A. Shanks & Son, London, acknowledging the Secretary’s letter of June 21st with order for new cylinders, &c., for locomotive. A telegram was received from D. Campbell, Waiuku, asking price of s.s. Mbturoa. , The Secretary was instructed to reply that the Moturoa was not for sale.

The Secretary laid on the table the following: .The bank books made up to date; letter rent and imprest books; quarterly shipping, export and import returns to September 15; and four weekly shipping returns to October 15. The Works Committee who met,on October 9th reported that the matter of repairs to fences at Moturoa be left over; that Heta Ihaia Taiwhanga.be informed the Board knows nothing about his claim to be considered in connection with, the land mentioned in bis letter; that Mr Shaw, carpenter at the works, be paid at the . rate of 7a per diem ; that ■ the requisitions for • stores be agreed to. The report was adopted. : EXPENSES Mr Connett moved and Mr B-wley seconded, “ That the-sum of £8 be paid to. the Chairman to cover =h's expenses on his late visit to Wellington, and that a vote of thanks be given hiuj for his services on-, that occasion.” 1 Carried;■-■■■ : . . Humphries giving him notice to remove, earth placed by him on section 15, Mt Elliot reserve.”, Carried. . .ARREARS. Mr George moved and Mr - Connett seconded “ That as Messrs Edgecombe and Scsndlyn. have taken no action upon the repeated notices sent them from this Board, and .as. their rent is considerably in- arrear the Board’s solicitor be now instructed to re-enter upon the land now in their occupation, and take proceedings against them for recovery of overdue rent.” - -Carried.'
