Mr Newton King’s Weekly Report*

New Plymouth, September 22. Owing to the backward spring feed is unusually short for the time of the year, and all classes of stock are looking at their worst, and buyers are very slow,to operate; with the advent of warmer weather, however, I anticipate a brisk demand for young stock, and improved prices. At Stratford, on Tuesday, the yards were fairly filled, young stock and dairy cattle predominating. The cattle on the whole were a rough lot, and bidding was slow throughout. However, nearly all young stuff were sold either at the hammer or privately. Only two pens of big steers came forward, and these were of very mixed quality, showing a good deal of the Jersey. Both lots were placed at satisfactory prices. Springing heifers and ordinary dairy stock were rather lower than usual, but Mr Starne s dairy cows, which were a nice lot, made good prices. Calves made 29s 6d to 85s; yearlings, 36s to 40s; 12 to 15-month steers, £2 7s ; 2-year do, £3 la 6d to £8 2s , heifers in calf, £3 to £3 6s 6d; springers, £4 2s 6d to £6 10s ; store cows, £2 15s 6d to £3 .10s ; cows and calves, £2 17s 6d. Mr Starne’s dairy cows in milk, £5 12s 6a to £8; springers, £5 5s to £7 los. Mr Phillips’ dairy, £5 15s to £7. At Waiwakaiho, on Thursday, there was rather a small muster. The sale, however, showed a marked improvement, bidding being brisk'throughout, with an unsatisfied demand for young stock, nearly every pen being sold at the hammer, either at or in excess of vendors’ reserve. ' Dairy cattle also were well competed for, and all sold at satisfactory prices, I quote : Small calves, 16s 6d to 245; good do, 26s to 87s 6d; yearlings, £2 to £2 4s; 12 to 15-month mixed, £2 9s ; heifers in calf, £3 ; springers, £5 to £6; store cows, £2 12s 6d to £3 ss; cows in calf, £3 10s to £4; springers, £4 10s to £6. .
