MANAIA.
(Our Own Correspondent.)
Mr G. Hutchison, w r e note, is engaged in drafting a new Counties Bill, by which inter alia he intends to hand over the control of county roads in town districts to the town district. The rating power, however, is restricted to -|d. The Chairman of the Manaia Town Board in view of this has written Mr Hutchison pointing out the inadequacy of the proposed rate noting that for last five years Manaia Town Board has had control of one and a half miles and eleven chains of county road and for this has been collected a county rate of-fd, besides the ordinary town rate. Mr McGuire has also received a copy of the letter and has promised to keep the matter in sight. The Manaia Town and Domain Boards met on August Bth, and transacted the usual business, The Domain has recently been overhauled, the tower painted, also the new goalposts, and three new iron seats are to be procured. It is the of this Board to beautify the Domain as much as possible henceforth. The Town Board has given a donation of £5 to the Brass Band, as for 1898. Our Band now numbers 18 members and under the efficient instruction of M. Hulse should prove an acceptable attache to the town. Our next Mutual Improvement evening is to be entirely conducted by the ladies. An agreeable entertainment is anticipated. Mr Malcolm Stevenson, an old hunter and pioneer, has consented to read a most instructive paper on alligators and crocodiles as a supplement to Mr Scott-Smith’s paper on India and in reply to the numerous questions on those animals which time prevented our local barrister from descanting upon at length.
A social is to be held next month in «. : .d of the building fund of the Roman Catholic Church.
