AWATUNA.

(Our Own Correspondent.)

The advent of the Opunake Times is hailed as a red letter day for Opunake and surrounding districts, and we look forward to having an organ to light our battles, to air our politics and to cater for us generally. To begin with then it is needful that your readers should know where we are. Well, we are at Awatuna, and Awatuna has a meaning in Maori, viz; I,“Eels in plenty.” Just so, eels live in mud, and that is exactly it. Awatuna is a thriving settlement about ten miles eost of Opunake on the Eltham IRoad with mud canals (called roads f in this locality) leading north and south. , bince you were pleased to visit us, Mr Editor, we have made a lit!*"; progress. The Eltham Hoad has received its coat of metal and is being blinded by the contractors now at work, s« that you can travel from Eltham railway station to the Taungatara in a buggy, and from thence by the mud boat to Opunake. We are longing for spring to come that we may see the wasterfi end of the road •netalled into Opunake. The Awatuna Town Hall is making good progress rand sites have been selected for a bakery near the-Post Office, and a store by the smithy and it is rumoured that other buildings are contemplated. _Mr J. C. George met the Punehu milk suppliers . a few days ago at the factory, and made terms for the coming season, but it is difficult to get at the terms, for they say they are slid- • ing ones, and from what I can learn the intending suppliers are doubtful how the terms will hatch out eventu- - ally.
