Everything comes to him who waits—provided he not only waits, but works. M-G-M star Robert Montgomery has long yearned for a chance to try his hand at directing. He’ll have that chance when “Lady in the Lake” gets under way. Montgomery will direct tho film and star in it. Others in the cast are Audrey Totter and Lloyd Nolan. ¥ ¥ * Myrna Loy is back at M-G-M, and again as Mrs. “Thin Man.” For the sixth time Myrna and Bill Powell will co-star as Nick and Nora Charles. The story of the new film, “The Song of the Thin Man,” centres round the murder of a famous hand leader. ¥ ¥ ¥ Character actress Aline MaeMahon has been chosen as Wallace Beery’s leading lady in his latest film, “The Mighty McGurk,” the story of an ex-prizefighter. Young Dean Stockwell, who stole so many hearts, and scenes, in “Anchors Aweigh,” will play Beery’s young friend and admirer. ¥ ¥ ¥

Van Johnson and Claude Jarman, Jr., have been cast for two of the top roles in “High Barbarec,” a South Sea adventure story by Charles Nordhoff and James Hall, tho team that wrote “Mutiny on the Bounty.” Claude is the little boy who made such a hit in tho juvenile lead of “The Yearling.” I-lis excellent performance in the latter film brought him the role in “High Barbaree.” The girls in this film are June Allyson ind Marilyn Maxwell. ★ ★ * New York stage actor Richard Hart has the unusual distinction of making his screen debut as 3-reer Garson’s leading man in ‘A Woman of My Own.” The ilm, based on Leonhard Frank’s jeautiful love story “Karl and |nna” is set in rural France.

“It Happened in Brooklyn” is the title of a forthcoming M-G-M musical, to be produced in Technicolor. The film is now being readied for production and will star Kathryn Grayson, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante and Peter Lawford. Kathryn co-starred with Sinatra once before in “Anchors Aweigh,” and had Lawford and Durante as her leading men in “Two Sisters From Boston.” * * *

Tom Drake, Beverly Tyler and Melvyn Douglas have been added to the cast of M-G-M’s superWestern, “Sea of Grass.” Drake, who ic- rapidly acquiring a largo fan following, is very thrilled at this chance to appear in a film with his idol, Tracy. It is his most important assignment so far, and his first Western. * ★ * Walter Huston, Marilyn Maxwell, Gloria de Haven and Agnes Moorehead have been chosen to head the cast of “Ah Wilderness” which Producer Arthur Freed is planning as a musical film. The Eugene O’Neill play will be brought to the screen under the title “Summer Holiday.” ★ ★ ★ Elizabeth Taylor will star in “The Spindle Age,” the story of an adolescent girl in search of glamour and a beau. Young Miss Taylor has recently finished work in “The Courage of Lassie,” in which she co-stars with the famous collie dog. “The Courage of Lassie,” which is a Technicolor production, will be released in Australia before the end of the year. * •¥• * After an absence of two years, Brian Donlevy has returned to the M-G-M lot to join forces with Robert Walker and Tom Drake in the starring roles of “The Beginning Or the End,” the film that is based on the invention of the atomic bomb. Other prominent members of the cast are Beverly Tyler, Hurd Hatfield and Audrey Totter.
