Shipping. The m.v. Waiotahi arrived at Opotiki at midday to-day and will probably leave for Auckland at the same hour to morrow. Death of M.P. The death has occurred of Mr. H. E. dull, M.P. Deceased was a wellknown member of the National Party, and represented Waipawa. The flag on the Post Office was flying at half-mast to-day as a mark of respect to the deceased. Closing of Mails, An alteration in the closing of the mail services will tako effect at the Opotiki Post Office on and after Monday, 50th. September. Full particulars! oE the alterations will appear in the mail notices in Friday’s issup of the “Nows”.

Patriotic Shop. Additional sums which have been received by the Young Farmers’ Club for the Patriotic Shop, of which they were in charge recently, have brought their total up to £25 7s 6d. This is the largest amount so far taken in a single effort. Notifiable Disease. For the week ended at noon on Monday 13 cases of notifiable disease, six of bacilliary dysentery, five of tuberculosis, one of diphtheria, and one of puerperal fever, were reported in the East Capo health d'strict. No deaths from infectious diseases were reported. Increased Production. A letter to the editor of the Opotiki News has been received in which the writer strongly urges all citizens to do their utmost to produce more. Unfortunately the letter is worded in such a manner that its publication would cause offence to a number of Opotiki residents, and for this reason it cannot bo published. Dog Nuisance. Reference to the dog nuisance in the business area of Wairoa was made at the annual meeting of the Wairoa Chamber of Commerce, when it was decided to approach the Borough Council with a request that further efforts be made to deal with the problem. It was stated that for a while there had been a marked improvement, but lalcrly the trouble had become very pronounced again.

Summer Time. A Gazette not.ee states that Summer t.vno this year will commence at two o’clock New Zealand standard time in the morning of Sunday, 29th. iimant, and ends at two o’clock New Zealand standard time in the morning of Sunday, 27th. April, 1911. For the purpose of giving effect to the Act the time will therefore be advanced thirty in.mites as from 2 a.in. New Zealand standard time on Sunday, 29th. instant, and bo put back thirty minutes as from 2 a.in. New Zealand standard time on Sunday, 27th. April, 1941.

Heavy Rainfalls. A recent Gazette records sonic exceptionally heavy rainfalls in New Zealand for the month of August. Horner recorded 26.18 inches, while Matarua, Cape Runaway was next with a fall of 22.93 inches. Other Opotikj rainfalls were: Rukuhanga, Gape Runaway, 13.49; Maerachako, 7.74 ; Opotiki, 9.28 ; Huntress Creek, 7.39; Matawai, 10.80; Koranga Valley, Matawai, 8.75. One station recorded rain on 28. days at Chatham Islands, but the, total rainfall was very little. Very light falls were recorded in Otago, quite a number of stations recording rain on two dliyji only, the total falls being under a half inch. Waioeka Collision Sequel. A sequel to a collision in the Waioeka Gorge on July 4 was heard by Mr.-E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Gisborne Magistrate’s Court on Monday, when two Auckland motorists were charged, each with two alleged offences. Frank Leopold Townsend was charged with failing to keep as far as possible to the left of the road, and with driving without duo care and attention. Bruce Wellesley Lindenian was charged with driving at a dangerous speed and with driving without due care and attention. After the evidence had been heard, Townsend was fined £l and costs £2 3s 6d for failing to keep as far as possible to the left of the road, the other charge being dismissed. Both charges against Lindenian were dismissed.
