SHEEP-WORRYING

A BAD dPOTIKI CASE NEARLY FORTY ANIMALS DEAD TERRIBLY M L'ITL A%E J> " ■. 5,,! C MANY OTHERS INJURED The worst case of sheep-worrving ever reported in Opotiki occurred at the farm of Air Guy Francis, at Little Awanui, on the Coast road, resulting in the Joss of many sheep and injury to others.

The scene on the farm yesterday was a. pitiable one with dead and injured sheep scattered; over the hills and: in the gullies. Thirty-seven sheep were killed and many others injured out of a flock of 200. In one gully ten Hay dead almost side bv side. Alost of the carcases were terribly mutilated and many had broken legs. The dogs responsible for the worrying- had gone right through the mob but no warning was given that they were at their deadly work. When the liavoc was discovered two dogs were seen making off in different directions and efforts are now being made to discover the

marauding animals. About two weeks ago two ‘sheep were found dead on ALr Francis’ farm, these animals also having been worried by dogs. lAbout a year ago Air Francis sold portion of his dairy herd and decided to go in for mixed farming. Included in the sheep were a number of breeding ewes. Only about two of these had lambed but these had not been attacked by the dogs. Air Francis is a very heavy loser, as practically alt the carcases were rendered useless.
