The Oxford Observer. PUBLISHED WEEKLY. SATURDAY APRIL 10th 1897 WATER SUPPLY.

The ratepayers m the Brown's Bock and Cooper's Creek districts have every cause to be satisfied with the liberal manner m which they have been treated by the present Government. The Boards has jost received another contribution of £300 making m all £1500. £500 of which will be appropriated to the Cooper's Creek Subdivision, and this amount will be 25 per cent, on the Loan, and will allow the several loop-lines to be completed without any additional call on the ratepayers pocket m the district, and their special thanks are due not only to the late members of the districts i Messrs Meredith and Buddo, but to tha indefatigable energy of the worthy Chairman of the Board, who if lie can succeed m getting further important concessions from the Government m the shape of land reserves, free water will be assured, but alas for the shortsighted policy of the Kaiapoi Election m returning an opposition member will very severely handicap him, and may directly be the cause of frustrating bis designs notwithstanding the logical reasons brought forward, including the one, that, as" the Water Supply Board is doing County Board work they should m consequence receive a third of all land alienated m the District, which, as a matter of course will include all land taken by the Midland Eailway Company including 89100 acres of manuka country. - One third of the amount realized from that land, poor as it is, would materially reduce the liability of the W.R.B. ; Humours are afloat ttat the election of ■ Mr O'Halloran will be contested, but if no better candidates are coming, forward than those -whose names %c have heard mentionedMr.O'sHalloran'selection will be practically a walk over ; However, we have no wish to damp the courage of youthful aspir-

ants to public favor, but to put their strength against a veteran 'flushed with victory like the present Chairman of the Board, reminds us of Landseer's picture of Dignity and Impudence.
