Professor Leone Levi, dealing with "The Progress of the United Kingdom," gives the following illustration of the increase m the consumption of food m England under the influence of falling prices and rising wages, and and thereby furnishes a warning with regard to the possible result of the establishment of opposite tendencies. Average Consumption m England per head of Population: — ■ 1855. 1885. lbs ... lbs Tea ... 2-28 ... 5-02 Sugar ... 29-24 ... 74-28 Bacon and Ham 0-96 ... 11-47 Butter ... 1-79 ... 7-15 Cheese ... 1-53 ... 5-48 Wheat and Wheatflour 58-16 ... 235-97 The figures show that the consunip^tion of food iv Great Britain has been incroased^fourfold per head daring thirty years, and it cannot therefore be denied that unfavourable conditions might reduce it again to the old level
that is, to jone- fourth of the. present quantity. These facts and considerations therefore' 'show the danger 'to which bimetallism would expose our nrhiln*»Pi«a
