LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The adjourned annual meeting oi " this Committee commenced at 9.15 Monday morning. Present— H. W. ■ Bishop, Esq., S. M., Rev. H. H. Mathias, Messrs Isaac Wilson, T. . Wilson. G. Wallace, H. Seed, H. i Turner, A. D. Hassall and W. Har- \ rison. The adjourned applicants were':— P. , Bourgeois, Oxford Hotel, Oxford ;-^b*Roberts, Club Hotel, and J. Murray. R*?d Lion Hotel, Rangiora; M. H. Lake, Middleton Hotel, andß. Purchase, Kaiapoi Hotel, Kaiapoi ; and Caroline" Dearsley, White Crane Hotel." - Woodend, under notice that the Committee would consider the question of refusing the licenses, and Bessie Hodges, Harewood Arms, Oxford, and W. A. Graham, Kaikanui Hotel, Kaiapoi undec notice to find new licensees. Mr Franks addressed the Committee. P. Bourgeois, Oxford Hotel (Mr Lane appeared. The applicant said - the hotel was in the centre of tbe township. It was not carried on for bar trade but foi* public travelling and stock. Had a five acre paddock, wns^ near the Bank and next the pibli ; Domain, where cricketers aid footballers used his hotel. -Was the nearest to the saleyards and well famished. Applicant was 75 years of age aud he and his family were dependent on it.. To Chairman — Was the leaseholder, *~ the lease expired in a year with condition far renewal. Bessie Hodges. Harewood Arms, Oxford— Mr Cathro appeared, and said he was in the position of not knowing what* he had to meet. Mr Lane appeared also for Ward and Co., the owners. The Chairman said he wou-d confer with the Committee and the case would he taken later. Mr Cathro put in a petition signed by seventy persons'within a mile of the house, which included all- except My* Weylandt and another person. The applications adjourned- at last sitting and now granted were • —J. Murray, Red Lion Hotel. Rangiora - Kaikanui Hotel, Kaiapoi (subject to transfer); B. Hodges, Harewood Arms, Oxford; R. Purchase, Kaiapoi Hotel, (subject, to repairs). 7 The licenses refused were :— Club Hotel, Rangiora; Oxford Hotel, Oxford; White" Crane Hotel, Woodend ; and Middleton's Hotel, Kaiapoi. The licensee of the Harewood Arms was informed the Committee was satisfied she was a fit and proper pei^on to have the license, and the! allegations against her were not supported. It was understood the \ Committee came to no decision as tp granting conditional licenses, but the\respecti /e applications for these would have to be considered.
