QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY AT OXFORD.

The Queen's Birthday though not observed as a general holiday was neverless pretty lively. Th«*s usual fortnightly sheep-sale was held and largely attended, but we are sorry to say that the prices realized were not so satisfactory as forrnefty. Towards the afternoon however our citizens commenced to don their holiday attire and groups of fanrlies and friends were seen wending their way towards the West Oxford Town Hall where a gift auction was held, inangurated by the members of the Methodist Free Church. Mr Ingram kindly gave his services as Auctioneer and under his kindly influence the bidding went merrily and the result was highly satisfactory, and it must have been a source of great pleasure to the liberal donors to see that tlieir efforts m a good cause were appreciated by the purchasers. The Sale was opened by the delivery of appropriate little speeches by our Liberal Members Messrs Meredith and Buddo then followed the tea with much cake eating, interspersed with kindly greetings and merry gossip. Mesdames Hawke, Dally, Ancall, Munn, Youngman, and Miss Whyte are responsible for the production of fragrant tea and those various little nick nacks that tempt the Epicurean taste. The Oonverzatione was a marked success being enlivened by Magic Lantern displays, songs and recitation and after cordial votes of thanks had been passed to the .canvassers and Mr Ingram, Mr Paget and the Ladies, 'the singing of the Nathional Authem brought a mort delightful holiday to a close, , •
