WAIMAKARIRI-ASHLEY WATER-SUPPLY BOARD.
On Saturday last, Mr J. O'Halloran, the Chairman of the WaimakaririAshley Water Supply Board, and the Engineer, Mr Johnson- Webster, made an inspection of several creeks m the Board's water supply area. In Cooper's Creek they were supprised to find the volume of water which, was flowing. The water was 10ft wide and six inches deep, and flowing at a rate of four feet per second, and according to a calculation made hy the engineer this means that ten millions of gallons a day is coming down the creek. The Chairman when speaking about the visit Tuesday, added that it was the nicest drinking water one could wish for, and there was not another stream m the district with purer water. This grand si»pply could be utilised for the townships of Oxford's service. Mr M. Dixon was of opinion that if the supply was as good and permanent as stated it would be of incaluable advantage to Oxford, as the want of water was a drawback to the township. It is considered that even if the quantiiy of water m the creek was one-third less than what was flowing mit on Saturday last, it would give an ample drinking supply to Oxford, and there is evidence from such old residents as Mr Ryde and others that the water m the creek has never been less than it has been recently. To bring this grand supply of water into the township it is estimated at _1000. This ought to be brought under the notice of the Minisof Mines as a work that ought to be taken m hand both by the residents of the Oxford district and the Government, and which the unemployed labour could be utilised on. All those opposed or m 7 favour of the above n amed scheme are .particularly invited to send correspondence on the subject to this Journal for publication. En.
