BENNETT'S STUMP PULLER

Having rsceived a courtious' invitation from Mr Charles Mclntosh; representative cf Walter A.- Wood, for North Canterbury to witness a trial of Bennetts Stump Puller, we have much pleasure in stating that the machine performed its work in { a very satis&ct--ory manner. The. machine though light durable arid easy to move from stump to stump possesses immense power and a weight of 50 tons can be lifted by one man. The power is imported by the rack and pinion principle worked by a lever and can be adjusted to long and short purchase according to the power required, the speed can also be regulated at will* The machinery is supported on a tripbrd frame with skids, and slides along easily by the aid of alight draught horse. The price of the Machine complete is £25 delivered to the purchaser. From what we have seen we think the machine is likely to come into general use and ! will be a 'great boon to Oxford Bush owners.

One of the most notable men who attended the sittings of the late Postal Cpnference is . Dr.. Cockburn, Postmaster T .General.of South Australia and ex-Premier of tha^^colopy. He is a thorough-going democrat, and a great admirer of the progressive Liberal policy, which has been so successful in New Zealand during the last two 'or three years. He .thoroughly believes in a graduated land tax and is a sterling Kadical, right down to the ground. A Berkshire man by birth, he emigrated to South Australia in 1875. Although still quite'a young inan he has filled many high positions in the colony which he has made his Home, and although his Premiership ' did 'not last loijig he will regain the position.before long, and have a longer term of office. ThVddioriy 'was Hardly ripe ; for' his ultra democratic policy wJaen he: took the reins, but his time will come again. "" FaibPiay,
