To the Editor of ' The Observer.'
Sik, — A skilled laborer from Oxford, well up to weight, and not particular as to what work he taokled, paid a visit to the works at Springfield, and reports as follows :— " I was unsuccessful m obtaining work. Those who have been engaged at piece work have nut realised more than 4s a day. A few men are engaged at the cuttings at a fair rate of wages, but no more can be taken on until the arrival of tools and appliances, which will be at least three weeks from the present time. I am informed from reliable authority that men both at Auckland and Dunedin have been communicated with, and. are expected to arrive shortly ; this will have the effect of increasing competition, and doubtless employers will take advantage of it." In the face of these facts, and the fact that the harvest has not by any means absorbed all the spare labor, it behoves all workmen to support the Union, and remedy as far as possible the inconvenience, not to say positive hardships, to which working men are constantly exposed.
