CUST.

It is proposed to give an entertainment at an early date, with the object of raising funds for the purohase of prizes to be distributed m the Cust District School. About a year ago ago an|, entertainment was provided by Mr R. Meredith, the late master, which realised, it was understood realised a net profit of something over £3. No doubt this sum is being husbanded m the hands of some Treasurer, and will prove to be a valuable make-weight when added to the proceeds of the forthcoming "show." It is to bo hoped that the promoters will have every success m their kind efforts for the children. The guileless residents m this bucolic district have had tho honor recently of being visited by some travelling philanthropists, anxious to sell tweeds and shirtings and other valuable materials for next to nothing at all. The philanthropists informed their willing customers that the goods were salvage from some mill lately burnt down. This only shows how the profession of philanthrophy brings its reward m the shape of superior knowledge; for the simple folk of Cust do not remember hearing of the disastrous fire which has brought them such good luck. The hope has been freely expressed by unkind people that the goods may turn out to be of such quality as cannot be procured for the same money at the stores. It has been noticed that the travellers did not offer these tempting bargains to the local storekeepers- This was not nice of them ; it was, as it were, the fly m the ointment of their generosity.
