THE FUTURE OF THE BONUSES.
Tlie question of what will happen when the bonuses are discontinued if. already engaging attention in certain quarters.in Wellington. The bonuses that are now being paid to State and private employees may not unreasonably be estimated as ranging from .four to five millions per annum, in the case of single men and women to whom, the bonuses were made applicable, they represent largely, additional spending money—"money to burn," as one paper has put it. The married man with a family has fouivl them both helpful: and necessary, and has probably made better use of the extra moneys paid to him than the more irresponsible class of unmarnel folk.' The bonuses are in addition to the award rate' of wages and are liable to be discontinued when the cost of living falls. 1.1 may be a case of meeting trouble halfway to raise the question oft what will happen when the bonuses ar<e discontinue!, but there are possibilities and contingencies arising out of the business that will have to be reckoned with.
