RECORD LONGEVITY.
Audrei Nicolaivitch Schmidt furnishes an apparently well authenticated case of longevity extending well over 130 years. In 1908 Schmidt travelled from Tiflis to Warsaw in orler to figure in a pageant organised by his old corps, the Royal Regiment. His discharge papers proved that Schmidt enlisted in 1796, at the age of 24, and after taking part in various campaigns received the order of St. George and a silver medal for conspicuous bravery in 1812. Scmidt subsequently re-, ceived five other decorations, the last being earned during the seige of Sebastopol for saving the life of VicerAdmiral Nochimoff. He retired from the army in 1857 with the rank of sergeant-irajor and a yearly pension of 1200 roubles. When seen at Warsaw in 1908 Schmidt was nearly blind, but his hearing was good, and he could walk with the assistance of a stick.
