WORKS IN THE COUNTY.

ENGINEER'S REPORT,

The engineer, Mr E. Shaw, submitted the following report at the meeting of the Ohinemuvi County Oounc.il on Thursday : —

"I beg to report that during the past month the roads havj suftVed owing to the heavy rains and in consequence contracts for metalling have been held up. Two contracts have been completed, for which final payments are made. "The bridge authorised to be built on the Tahuna-Ohinewai road, near Mr W.- Eddowes' property, has been completed, the work having bsen carried out by the foreman of the Paeroa riding. Flood .Damages.—During the month a flood of exceptional height occurred in the upper reaches of the Ohinemuri River, which brought down large quantities of timber and carried away two traffic bridges, viz : the llatarua and Mataora bridges, 'thUs isolating the settlers. In company with the chairman and mining inspector I made an inspection of same and arrangements ware made with a Mr Angle for the traffic to go through his farm for t the present, this being the only available crossing. The Minister of Mines was communicated with and a sum of money asked for for flood damages, and in response Mr Murray, district engineer, Public Works Department, Auckland, came down to report. In company with the chairman the damage was inspected and no further communication on the matter has \ven received. Damage to roads in the vicinity was not serious, washouts occurring on the Houmonga and Waihi-Whanga-mata roads. It has been reported to me that considerable damage is done to the Golden Cross to Wha'rekiraupunga track through fallen timber and slips.—The engineer's recommendation was agreed to.

On two occasions during the month I paid visits to the Patetonga riding, once to Tahuna-Ohinewai road takingMr Neil and tools, and to select a site for the bridge ; the second occasion to Patetonga and Kaihere. The flaxmillers, against whom action was t be taken for damaging the road, suspended work for the winter, so there was no need to go further with the matter. The main road to Kaihere is in fair, order and the maintenance work carried out this winter has had a beneficial effect. I also laid off the contract for the Mangawhero Bridge.

Re Mr J.! Thorpe's application to have old Te Aroha Road drain cleaned This drain is in a bad state, and to carry out the work necessary to take the water off the land asked for by Mr Thorp will cost approximately £20.

It was decided that the work bs done provided settlers interested pay half the cost.
