QUEEN OF EAST FETE.

THE "LINDFIELD" OUTING 1

Notwithstanding the incessant rain all day long, there was a fair attendance at the residence ot Major Browne on Wednesday afternoon. The grounds were placed at the of the "Queen ot the Eastf Committee, for the purpose of' holding* sports tor the benefil of the Wounded Soldiers' I 1 und.

Major and Mrs H. H. Browne had spent no end of labour in order to make the fete a success, and it undoubtedly would have been, had not the rain interfered so disastrously., As it was, however, a goodly number faced the elements, and were rewarded by seeing a good programme ot sports and other attractions.

Mrs Browne and other ladies did all in their power to drive dull care away. 1 There was a large marquee on the ground, where refreshments could be obtained, and, later on m the afternoon hot tea and cakes were available, which were much appreciated, for the day was cold, bleak, and miserable \n< the extreme. Notwithstanding the steady ram, the programme of sports proceeded all the same,,though some of the competitors were almost wet through. The Paeroa Brass Band livened up the scene considerably, and the: sports programme was gone through just as merrily as it the day had been perfection itself. The following are the results :— Physical Drill Competition.—-Thames hi; Paeroa, 104;. Te Aroha, .101. Prize, silver medal to each member ot winning team. , Greasy Pig Race. —Cadets Patterson and Maughan, Waihi; 10s each. Ladies' Race.—Mrs Dunlop, 1 (enlarged photo); Miss Vincent, 2 (61bs tea). . P; How .Fight.—Sievewright, 1 (watch); Herawani, 2 (novel). Thread - the - Needle Race.—• Miss Wright,.! (trimmed hat); Miss Me Watlers, 2 (^old brooch); Miss Norton, 3, Sword Cutting Competition.—LanceCorporal Donnelly (Orpington fowls). Several other attractions were in evidence, including a splendid exhibition of sword exercise by Major Browne ; exhibition of lance exercise by SergeantMajor J. C. Cooke ; and bayonet fighting by Sergeant-Majors Donovan and Campbell. A few rounds of comic boxing created no end of amusement, as also did the antics ot a couple of clowns.
