TWO MEN WHO WENT TO THE St. LEGER.
■ , -+_ — ■ ■■ A saw-grinder from Sheffield, and a brass-caster from Birmingham had for several years wished to visit Doncaster on the day of the St. Leger, but each time something unforseen had stopped them. At length they thought that they would makf sure. They took themselves to the '-'Butterscotch town" on the eve ol the St. Leger but found it difficult to get a bed, until one old lady offered them a bed in a "cock loft,' the only means of access being a ladder and a trap door, but after showing them the way up the old lady dropped the trap-door and retir.ed Now, the men, being rather tired, were soon asleep. After many hours one of them woke up, but finding i 1 dark (only natural) he was soor snoring again. The next time his pal started up, but he also finding it still dark thought it could not be time to get up. At last, however, they began to get hungry, so jumping out of bed they soon begar knocking their heads against the low wall. At last they saw the /li&ht. through the trap-door, so dressing themselves as quickly as • pbssiblt they went down, almost frightening the old girl out of her wits. -
"Weel, weel," she said, forgotten you."
"I'd clear
"'Ne'er mind," they at once replied, "so long as we are in time to se« t' Leger run."
"T' Leger, t' Leger," said the old lady, "why, man, t' teger were mr yesterday."
Now you've only to mention the Leger to either of tlieni if you wan/ a week in the hospital.
"What do you do to keep you hands looking so nice ?" MI don't do anything."
