RATES IN ARREARS.
STEPS FOR COLLECTION
A statement regarding the rates for last year that are still unpud was made at the Thames County Council meeting yesterday by the Chairman (Mr R. YVBagnal!). Of the general rate some £417 was still uncollected, but of this amount about £1 17 was not recoverable, some being owing by Maoris .and old people, while some amounts were on the books by mistake. They should, however, have a fair chance of getting about of the amount. A number of people had not paid through pure neglect, and he had given the clerk a number of names of these people with instructions to let them know that if they did not pay they would be summoned. As to the summonses,' if the clerk had to make them out he should appear m Court in support of them. The Chairman suggested that the members of the-Council go through the rate book and prepare a list of the rates that should be struck off, and also a list of the people to be summoned. He was desirous of getting the rate book cleared by the end of the year, March 31st. Messrs Adams and, Alley thought the matter should be left to a small committee to attend to.
The Chairman also mentioned that there was still owing ,£157 10s of the hospital and charitable aid rate. Mr Deeble said that every effort should be made to get the money in. Mr Claxton said they should go right through the list and then summons the lot of those owing rates. The Chairman said that if they summoned a few of the people that would " prick" the others up. It was decided that the matter be referred to a committee consisting of the Chairman and Messrs Law, Baker, and Cooper.
