SPEED OF MOTOR CARS.
COROMANDEL SUGGESTION
The Thames County Council at its meeting yesterday received a letter from • the Goromandel County Council containing suggestions for a bye-law regulating the speed of motor cars. It was suggested that the speed limit be ten miles an hour on a straight run and four miles an hour round corners, the driver to sound the horn when going round corners, and all unnecessary noises, such as opening valves, to be forbidden. The Chairman (Mr Bagnall) said it would be useless passing a bye-law that would be continually broken. To limit the speed to ten miles an hour on the Thames- Coromandel Road would mean that motor car drivers would be always breaking the bye-law, while to make it iour miles an hour round corners would be limiting it to the pace of a walk. They should make the speed limit reasonable so that the bye-law could be enforced if necessary. Other members agreed that the suggested speed limit was too drastic, and one member considered the cars should be allowed to go as fast as they liked on a clear run, but should slow down when passing any horsemen or vehicles or when going round corners. On the motion ot Messrs Kilgour and Baker, the matter was refered to the chairman, clerk and engineer, who are to go through the bye-laws with the solicitor.
