A FORGOTTEN BABY

A remarkable instance of absentmindedness is reported from Port Melbourne. A young woman residing at Gladstone Street, South Melbourne, called upon her married sister, also of Gladstone Street, one afternoon last week, and took the latter's baby out for a ride in its go-cart. While the young woman went into a draper's shop in Bay Street the child in. its go-cart was left on the footpath. On completing her purchase the aunt returned home, overlooking the infant in her care. Mrs Stone, of Port Melbourne, who had noticed the screaming infant an hour or more previously, wheeled it to Port Melbourne police station at a-quarter past five o'clock. Constable Dara warmed some milk and ted the baby, whilst other officers took an interest in the mite, and b.ult up the fire in its interests. At aquarter to seven Mrs Stone called again, and, as no one had claimed the child, it was given into her care. It was not until nearly, seven o'clock, when the mother sent to the sisterJor her baby, that the latter recollected that she had tikt-n the child out and lorgotten it. Subsequently the baby was handei o/er to its parents,\s..fe and sounl.
