LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr H. Poland,, M.. J., returned to Paeroa from Wellington yesterday evening.

A successful social evening in connection with the anniversary of the Paeroa Methodist Sunday school was held in the Druids' Hall last night. A full account will appear in our issue of Friday next.

A reminder is given of the auction sale of stock by the Farmers' Co-opera-tivo Auctioneering Company to be held at Hikutaia to-morrow. The sale will commence at twelve o'clock sharp.

Calendars ior 1911 have reached us from the Victoria Insurance Company, illc North British and Mercantile Insurance Company, and the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., through the local agent, Mr W. Me Waiters.

The annual general meeting of shareholders of the Karangahake G.M. Co. is to be held at the company's office, Hobson Buildings, Shortland Street, Auckland, at three o'clock on Thursday, 15th inst.

The shop opposite the firebell at Paeroa is to be occupied by Mr J. A. Moore, baker and confectioner, who will stock a large quantity of the best confectionery and small goods. Wedding and birthday cakes at all prices will be obtainable, while a specialty will be made of Christinas cakes, for which orders should be given at once Mr Moore is prepared to cater for parties and picnics.

A runaway horse attached to Mr Wallis' buggy created a little mild excitement in Paeroa yesterday morning. Something frightened the horse, and it started off up the street at a great pace. Nobody was in the vehicle at the time, and it seemed as if there would be a smash up. Mr E. Bromwich, however, came to the rescue by chasing the cart, climbing in over the back, and pulling the frightened animal up before any damage was done.

Mr H. Lan Simpson, a well-known settler ot Hastings, the other day returned from a visit to Victoria. Giving his impressions to the Napier Daily Telegraph, Mr Simpson spoke in glowing terms of the prosperous conditions prevailing in that State, and of the abundance of evident wealth on all sides. The land in the western district, he says, is ( equal to that of Hawke's Bay, and is selling at from to £80 per acre. He adds that though farmers do not seem to carry out their operations in such an manner as is done in New Zealand, the Victorians were able to make it pay well, so that with the introduction of scientific methods the potentialities could hardly be realised. Mr Simpson said that one district alone was turning out one and a halt million sterling in butter, and a director of the associated factories of the western district had assured him that his turnover alone was one million sterling. According to Mr Simpson, at the present time ,£IOO,OOO worth of wool was being sold in Melbourne daily.

° At a meeting of Sunday school teachers at Dnnedin, says the Otago Daily Times, the Rev. W. Slade was strongly upholding the innate goodness of children as against the theory of thejr innate depravity.' Their little peccadilloes, he said, were very trifling, and might be compared to a calf or a colt kicking its mother in loving frolic. At a later stage a lady rose and told some of her experiences in the work of Sunday school teaching. One class m particular had become very unruly. They got under the seats, and one boy even went so far as to kick her. She had never realised before', she said, that this was only the love of the colt for the mother. When the laughter had subsided she was heard to say. that she would think very differently of that boy now.

Bishop Wilson, ot Melanesia, intends resigning the bishopric at the end of July next or at the end of next year, on account of the decision-to remove the headquarters of the Bishop from Norfolk Island to one ot the islands of Melanesia, where, owing to the unhealthy climate, it is undesirable that a man with a family should reside.

An unusual phenomenon occurred in Mas'terton the other day, when a whirlwind from the north swept along the bank of the Waipou River, encountering a number ot men and horses working on the main road. Articles of clothing, horses' nosebags, small stores and branches of trees were whirled high in the air, while the water was churned up to a height of several feet. The ground next morning was strewn with debris.

A good deal of quiet surprise is being expressed in Christchurch at certain innovations in. connection with the viceregal visit (says a correspondent). People who attended the various official functions have discovered that new ceremonies have been introduced. Ladies are required to curtsey to the representative of the King, and polite personages convey the necessary instructions before the presentations take place. Probably it was some stupid mistake that led the band to play " God Save the King " when Lady Islington, not accompanied by the Governor, ar;rived at the hospital fete, but the title of her Excellency is certainly insisted on with muc.h exactness. The wife of a prominent citizen attended a select gathering at Elmwood, and was told semiofficially the next day that her omission to wear court mourning was a serious offence. Rumour has it that the movement tor more rigid observation of ceremonial etiquette had its origin in an exalted quarter.
